Nyimbo Za Sifa

Issue 1 (3rd April 2006)

From Jane’s Desk

Praise the Lord! My name is Jane Wanjiku. Welcome to the first issue of our weekly Gospel music newsletter, Nyimbo za Sifa.   In this issue, we beam our spotlights on Esther Wahome, arguably Kenya’s most successful Gospel musician. In the coming issues, we will be profiling other equally successful musicians such as Reuben Kigame, Wangechi Mbogo, Jemmimah Mwaura, Ambassada, DJ Josh, Rufftone, among many others. We promise you a veritable feast of Gospel music from this part of the world.

We also bring to you what we consider to be the top hits in the local Gospel scene. However, we also have a fairly comprehensive list of Gospel music at http://www.ssmk.net/gospelmusic.htm.

PROFILE: ESTHER WAHOME

Although Esther Wahome has been a prolific Gospel singer since 1993, her chart busting Gospel album, Kuna Dawa, has catapulted her into international fame. The album, which has been described by some as a “mega Gospel cross-over hit”, has sold over half a million copies in one year alone.

Esther’s career in the Gospel music industry has been one of the success stories to come out of East Africa. Her music spans the soulful, uplifting worship songs, to the high tempo, upbeat, unmistakable African beat that ‘Kuna Dawa’ so vibrantly portrays.

Esther was discovered by a Kenya Broadcasting Corporation T.V. producer while singing in Church in 1993 - after completing her O-Levels at Pangani Girls High School in Nairobi. Ten years and eight albums later, Esther has, by the grace of God, evolved into an international Gospel singer.

This worldwide recognition has seen her tour and perform in many nations around the world. Her music is powerful, prophetic and life-changing. She however admits that her success has been brewed at the altar of prayer – and she gives all the glory to the Almighty God.

A winner of many awards, Esther is one of a new breed of Kenyan musicians who perform their soundtracks in Kiswahili, Kikuyu, Luhya, Dholuo and other languages, a phenomenon that is gaining fame abroad.

Her current album, Asali, although not as successful as Kuna Dawa, is said to be doing well. The, video, which was shot at different locations in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Newcastle, Whitley Bay and London, extols the sweetness of knowing Jesus as a saviour.

Esther’s Afro-fusion music style is very popular in Scotland. "I think this is because my music video, Kuna Dawa, is often shown on their Wonderful Television Network which broadcasts in the USA, Canada and the Caribbean Islands and most parts of Europe," she is quoted to have said.

After more than 10 years in the Gospel music industry, Esther is one of very few East African artistes who comfortably live off their music.
