From Jane’s Desk Praise the Lord! My name is Jane Wanjiku. Welcome to the second issue of our weekly Gospel music newsletter, Nyimbo za Sifa. In this issue, we beam our spotlights on Reuben Kigame, one of Kenya’s multi-talented and successful Gospel musician. I trust that you enjoyed reading our premier issue that went out last week. I'm grateful for those of you who took time to sample Esther Wahome's 8 albums. Those who placed orders and have not received their Cds should be receiving them in couple of weeks time. PROFILE: REUBEN KIGAME
It happened when he was three years old. He remembers trying to reach out for his plate at the dining table and missing it, to the surprise of his parents and siblings. His sister says she was so shocked that it affected her. His parents took him outside the house and tried to point at things but he could no longer identify them.
By the time the doctors extracted the cataract, it was too late. His cornea had already been damaged and he could no longer see clearly. He was left with very slight light perception, which enables him to tell night from day, whether there is light in the room or not, and basic colours if objects are brought very close to his eyes.
Blindness did not however deter Reuben from pursuing his dreams. He went to Kibos School for the Blind in Kisumu, Kenya, from 1973 to 1980, before joining the Salvation Army High School for the Blind in Thika, Kenya between 1981 and 1986. He then joined Kenyatta University between 1987 and 1990.
A trained teacher, Reuben Kigame has also ventured in other fields such as broadcasting and production of Christian music. However, Kigame says, ‘I am more involved in the defense of Christianity before its critics’. Towards this end he is the founder and director of an organization called Word of Truth Ministries, whose work is to defend Christianity and to train Christian apologists.
Reuben, an ardent admirer of renowned evangelist Billy Graham, is a self-taught apologetic. He is prolific Gospel musician with over 14 albums to his credit.

Reuben
Kigame was born on March 13, 1966. Though he was blind, he was not born
blind. He says that he did not know what happened but he ended up with a
cataract in his eyes. His parents did not know exactly what he was ailing
from, and blindness was not anywhere in their mind. To most people
listening to his parents describe his condition, it sounded like he was
suffering from measles.
